The transceiver converts the electrical signal into light and sets the physical limits of the link. Speed tier, distance, fiber type and connector are all determined by module selection. In HPC clusters the number of optical modules runs several times the number of switches — which makes it the most decisive line item in the fabric, both for cost and for failure statistics.
On the InfiniBand side, 800G XDR and 400G/800G NDR links generally use the OSFP form factor, while 200G HDR links sit in the QSFP family. SR-class modules target short distances over multimode fiber; DR and FR classes target longer distances over single mode.

How to choose
Distance and fiber type
For in-rack and adjacent-rack links, SR-class modules over multimode fiber are the most economical choice. Links across aisles or the whole hall require single mode fiber and DR/FR-class modules. If your fiber plant is single mode you cannot save money by ordering multimode optics — both ends must match the fiber.
The switch side differs from the HCA side
The two ends of the same link usually take different modules. Switch ports use finned housings designed for high-density cooling; server adapters take flat-top modules. When building an order list, count each end separately.
Twin-port and breakout logic
Some 800G-class OSFP modules split one physical port into two 400G links. That doubles port density on the spine side and reduces switch count. A breakout plan also affects cabling and cassette selection, so decide it together with the topology.
Connector type
Whether the module uses MPO-12, MPO-16 or duplex LC determines the trunk cables and cassettes you need. The wrong connector choice is one of the most expensive field mistakes because it means re-cabling, which is why we plan modules and cabling as one list.

Original (vendor-branded) modules are recognised directly under vendor support. Compatible modules offer the same optical characteristics at lower cost and are coded for the target hardware. Original modules in critical production fabrics and compatible modules on test and spare links is a common balance; we supply both.
Before the order we take your switch model and firmware version and confirm the module is validated on that platform. Modules ship coded for the target hardware.
At these speeds most link problems come from dirty connectors. We recommend cleaning every fiber end before installation and inspecting it with a scope where possible; this step is standard in our commissioning service.
