This family is the most widely used group of optical modules in InfiniBand NDR fabrics. What they share is the twin-port design: a single OSFP port carries two independent 400Gb/s NDR links. At the spine layer that doubles per-port capacity and reduces switch count.

The choice between the four variants comes down to distance and fiber plant: multimode SR8 for short rack-to-rack runs, single mode DR8 across the hall, and 2FR4 up to 2 km at campus scale. The electrical interface and form factor are identical across all variants, so nothing changes in switch configuration.

Connectivity Solutions

Spine ↔ leaf links (rack to rack)

Between two switches, the twin-port module splits one physical port into two 400G paths. Distances that stay within the same hall use multimode SR8; runs across aisles use single mode DR8. The same variant must be used at both ends.

Hall-to-hall and campus links

Links between different halls or buildings use the 2FR4 variant, which reaches up to 2 km. It multiplexes four wavelengths onto a single fiber pair, so it runs on single mode infrastructure with duplex LC connectors rather than MPO.

The difference between switch side and adapter side

Modules in this family have finned housings designed for high-density switch ports. Modules going into a ConnectX adapter in the server are selected with flat-top housings. Each end of a link is counted separately in the order list — skipping that distinction is the most common supply error we see in the field.

Doubles port density

The twin-port design lets a 32-connector switch deliver 64 links. Building the same capacity with single-port modules means twice the switches and twice the rack space; the difference in total cost of ownership far exceeds the difference in module price.

The right optical class for the distance

SR, DR and FR classes are defined for different fiber types and distances. If your fiber plant is multimode you choose SR; if single mode, DR or FR. Selecting the module to fit the infrastructure is always cheaper than changing the infrastructure to fit the module.

A predictable power budget

Draw in the 16–17 W band is a significant line in the total power and cooling calculation for high-density switch chassis. On a switch with all 32 ports populated, the optics alone exceed half a kilowatt; rack power planning must include that item.
