Cassette modules are the backbone of high-density data centre cabling: they break the multi-fiber MTP trunk run between racks into the individual LC connections used inside the rack.

The real gain of that structure is flexibility rather than tidiness. Backbone cabling is pulled once and stays put; subsequent moves, adds and changes happen at patch level. Three things drive cassette selection — fiber count, polarity type and fiber mode — and all three must match the module at the other end of the link.

Distributing a trunk inside the rack

A single MTP trunk cable run between racks is broken out on the cassette into 12 duplex LC connections. Aisle cabling stays as one thick run while in-rack links are made with standard LC patch cords; moves and changes are handled without pulling cable.

Getting polarity right from the start

Cassette type and trunk method are selected together: Type A/AF cassettes with Method A trunks, Universal cassettes with Method B trunks. A mismatch shows up in the field as a link that never comes up and takes time to diagnose — which is why we keep cassettes and trunks on the same plan.

Effect on the optical power budget

Every cassette adds to the total loss of the link. On short 400G and 800G runs that share rarely causes trouble; on long runs with many patch points the calculation is done at the quoting stage.

Moves and changes without pulling cable

As a deployment grows, the most expensive work is re-running aisle cabling. In a cassette architecture the backbone stays fixed and changes happen at the patch level inside the rack.

Order at high density

Housing several cassettes in a 1U panel terminates hundreds of fibers tidily. A labelled, modular structure shortens time spent on site during a fault.

Selected by fiber type

OM3, OM4, OM5 multimode and OS2 single mode variants are available. The cassette must match the fiber type of the modules at both ends of the link.
